This
view of the garden shows the overgrown path and
uninspiring planting. The lawn sloped down to
towards the house, creating an impractical and
uninteresting bank, which unfortunately was also
the main focal point from the kitchen window.
A
magnificent wrought iron gazebo straddles
the gravel path and acts almost like a cross
roads in the garden. A bench on the lawn
looks through the gazebo to a piece of sculpture
set amongst the planting. Rambling roses
have been planted to eventually cover the
structure and provide flowers and scent.
A
natural stone water feature and surrounding
planting was positioned to act as a focal
point from both the kitchen window and patio.
Sleeper terraces, softened by planting, replace
the grass bank. Original stone steps lead
up to the gravel path.
A
formal herb garden blends well with the character
of the property whilst producing an abundant
supply of herbs for cooking. Box hedging
will soon create a low, surrounding hedge,
whilst a magnificent pot makes a wonderful
centre piece.
The
path has now been reinstated, reusing the
old bricks that originally edged it. Sleepers
are positioned along the path to create interest,
whilst box hedging extends the formality
and will help to deter the dog from the planting.
Country
House Garden
Our brief for this project
was to create a garden that would be in keeping
with the formality of the property, whilst at the
same time be a usable family space. An existing
patio and retaining sleeper wall had to be considered
and included in the new garden. A straight path
was also requested, as it was the most direct route
from the house to the walled vegetable garden at
the end. Low maintenance and sturdy ‘dog
proof’ planting was introduced throughout
most of the garden whilst two herbaceous borders
added colour and scent along the edge of the path. |
